At the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, in the United States, Cuban Yunier "The KO Doctor" Dorticos (22-0-0, 21 KOs) beat Russian Dmitry "The Russian Hammer" Kudryashov (21-2- 0, 21 KO) for KO in the second round. The match was valid for the WBA cruiserweight title held by Dorticos as well as as the quarterfinals of the prestigious World Boxing Super Series tournament. The Cuban boxer has thus gained access to the semi-finals: he will face the challenge of Murat Gassiev and Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, which will take place on 21 October.
Fireworks were expected and expectations were not disappointed, albeit in a short-term match. Ready away, Kudryashov started working on the body with his heavy dirty left. Dorticos has studied the rival for a while before starting to leave his hands running fast one-two but being careful to come back to guard to avoid the dangerous replicas of the challenger. It came out a very well balanced and pleasing round at the end of which the two boxers have looked into the eyes for a long time in a sign of challenge.
Dorticos must have understood that he could afford a more unconcerned conduct since he had planted in front of Kudryashov since the beginning of the second round and accepted the exchange by claiming his advantage in terms of speed of arms. A couple of right-wingers surprised the challenger by letting him back down to lean on the ropes where Dorticos pushed him with a large number of right. The Russian, however, defended himself well with the very high guard on the face protection and came out of that prickly situation. The epilogue was manifested shortly afterwards: Kudryashov made the serious mistake of wearing a left jab with excessive slowness and the champion quickly took advantage of him to cross it with a terrifying right to the temple. The Russian collapsed on the carpet with his eyes wide, tried stoically to get up but was rightly stopped by the referee who embraced him, preventing him from falling back to the ground.
Dorticos appeared radiant at the microphone at the end of the match and after making the right tribute to his opponent last night he launched the challenge to Gassiev who is likely to be his rival in the semifinals. Dmitry Kudryashov, who has been very frantic, said he had prepared very hard for this challenge but that the Cuban strike had turned off the bulbs.
