It took place Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas the awaited UFC 209 event. But the evening did not meet the expectations, resulting in far less spectacular than expected.
The card has lost the day before one of his most spectacular fights, that is, the match between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson valid for the interim lightweight title.
The main event, the rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson for the welterweight title, has given no particular emotions. At the end is the champion to triumph in a really too tactical fightg which saw to score less than 60 shots to significant part - divided into the five rounds-, plus two takedowns. The only gasp in the last seconds of the fifth round, where after a hard exchange Thompson goes down, going close to being stopped. However the offensive Woodley fails to collect the desired effect, with the challenge that will end with a victory of the latter for Majority decision.
To give the show was instead the fight between Darren Elkins and Mirsad Bektic in the preliminary card. The challenge saw Bektic dominate for two rounds, forcing Elkins to undergo several heavy blows. Everything seemed to lead to a knockout win for athlete of Bosnian origin, but in the third round Elkins has become the protagonist of an incredible comeback. Elkins rises again in the third round showing great courage, putting ko Bektic with a combination of punches and kicks to the head.
The great victory of Elkins was, along with the knockout Overeem on Hunt, perhaps one of the best moments of this UFC 209. Elkins was also awarded with the "Performance of The Night" prize, together with the Brazilian Iuri Alcantara.
In the following video, we can see the highlights of the fight between Darren Elkins and Mirsad Bektic.
