Erislandy Lara vs Vanes Martirosyan II - Highlights
The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas has staged the rematch between Erislandy "The American Dream" Lara (23-2-2, 13ko) and Vanes "Nightmare" Martyrosian (36-3-1, 21ko) for the WBA superwelterweight title. Their first match was played in 2012, ending with a draw for technical decision in the 9th round after Martyrosian wounded above his left eye after an accidental headbutt, it was deemed unable to continue the match.
This time the match is over, but the fighting has been in some way affected by what happened in the first cross between the two, so much so that this time the misconduct are not missed. The beginning was unsettling: Martirosyan has been left to rival the center of the ring and began to box remittance. His attitude was a clear invitation to the attack, which Lara collected after studying what to do. The Martyrosian tactic has not brought good results, however, as Lara is not easy to cross. In the third round the Armenian then started to attack Lara, hitting with shots to the body.
Lara has scored more hits than his rival, but his actions were too sporadic. In the eighth round, the Cuban showed the best shots, putting pressure on the challenger and beginning to put a decent gap on the scorecards. In the tenth round the Armenian then received an official warning for a low blow. Then, given the green light by the referee, he headed Lara with outstretched arm, in a conciliatory gesture of reconciliation: when the Cuban reciprocated, Armenian took advantage of the occasion to attack him by surprise, but the mischief turned against because Lara sent him to empty, he turned it sideways and hit him with a short left hook in the clinch.
With a point penalty due to the official warning for Martirosyan now win by knockout was the only option. The last round Armenian tried, but was unable to find the decisive shot. The scores of the three judges were all in favor of Lara: 116-111, 116-111 and 115-112. The match was very edgy and not very spectacular, but Lara has however confirmed to be the man to beat in the super welterweight.
